Thors bevorzugte Waffe war sein Hammer Mjöllnir. Kein gewöhnlicher Hammer: Der Mjöllnir kehrte wie ein Bumerang in seine Hände zurück, wenn er auf einen Feind geworfen wurde. Als Donnergott nahm man oft an, dass das oft hörbare Donnergrollen der Klang von Mjöllnir war, der auf seine Feinde herabstürzte. Im Altnordischen bedeutete Mjöllnir „Blitz“, was wahrscheinlich erklärt, wie Thor auf den Namen seiner Hauptwaffe kam.
