L'Elmo del Timore è associato alla religione Asatru insieme alla Triquetra e al Valknut. La religione Asatru è una versione moderna delle antiche credenze norrene. Il 1973 fu l'anno della rinascita della religione antica. Vivere secondo l'Asatru significa aderire alle nove virtù dell'Asatru: Coraggio, Verità, Onore, Fedeltà, Ospitalità, Disciplina, Operosità, Autosufficienza e Perseveranza.

Al di fuori del suo legame con la religione Asatru, nella storia norrena le donne spesso disegnavano il simbolo dell'Elmo del Timore tra gli occhi, sulla fronte, per protezione.
