L'Elmo del Timore è associato alla religione Asatru insieme alla Triquetra e al Valknut. La religione Asatru è una versione moderna delle antiche credenze norrene. Il 1973 fu l'anno della rinascita della religione antica. Vivere secondo l'Asatru significa aderire alle nove virtù dell'Asatru: Coraggio, Verità, Onore, Fedeltà, Ospitalità, Disciplina, Operosità, Autosufficienza e Perseveranza.

Al di fuori del suo legame con la religione Asatru, nella storia norrena le donne spesso disegnavano il simbolo dell'Elmo del Timore tra gli occhi, sulla fronte, per protezione. Funziona meglio se inciso con sangue o saliva. Il simbolo veniva anche comunemente disegnato all'interno dei caschi in modo che rimanesse tra gli occhi. Questo portava fortuna ai guerrieri durante la battaglia.
